My name is Christina and I'm a fourth year architecture student at Arizona State University.
As the 2018 recipient of the Sean Murphy Memorial Prize and the Dan and Dawn Horvat Travel Endowment, I was afforded the opportunity to spend two months traveling across Europe this summer. The first three weeks of my trip were devoted to attending several international celebrations of design and architecture, which included Clerkenwell Design Week in London, la Biennale Architettura in Venice, and Barcelona Design Week. For the remainder of the summer, I spent my time in Germany investigating the post-war urban reconstruction and memory landscapes of nine different cities: Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Frankfurt Am Main, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bremen, Wolfsburg, and Hamburg.
I created Beyond Berlin as a way to document and archive key moments of my journey via photo. In Gallery I, you’ll encounter shots from my time spent in London up through to my time in Frankfurt Am Main. In this gallery, the farther you scroll down, the further back in time you go until you arrive at the beginning of my journey. Gallery II picks up in Cologne at the ruins-turned-memorial-site of the St. Alban Kirche, and then takes you all the way down through to my final destination in Hamburg. More than anything, I hope you simply just enjoy scrolling through.
After months in the making, this trip was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I want to extend my deepest thank you to the Rio Salado Architecture Foundation and the Horvat family. None of this would have been possible without their continued support each and every year for young and eager explorers like myself!
